(As of January 15, 2021, The Ruth Landes Memorial Research Fund will pause ALL GRANT MAKING ACTIVITIES, effective until January 15, 2022. No new grants will be made while this program review is underway. Please check back in 2022 to see if our program activities have resumed normal operation.)

The Landes Grants were made possible by Ruth Landes, Ph.D. (1908-1991) for interdisciplinary research, including field studies, into subjects that were of interest to Dr. Landes during her professional and academic career. Dr. Landes conducted fieldwork among Afro-Brazilians, African-Americans in the United States of America, and American Indians, including the Ojibwa, Potawatomi, and Sioux. She worked in the United States, Canada, Brazil, England, Scotland, South Africa, Spain and Switzerland. Her research topics included, but were not limited to, aging, gender and sexuality, race and ethnicity, immigrant and minority populations, culture and education, language and identity, and religion. Information on the work of Dr. Landes can be found in the Ruth Landes Bibliography and in the description of her professional papers at the National Anthropological Archives, National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution.

Grants are available for individuals and institutions. Funding preference will be given to research proposals on the subjects reflected in the Ruth Landes Bibliography and in the description of her professional papers at the National Anthropological Archives (NAA). Special consideration will be given to applicants who work within Landes-related materials, including the papers and unpublished manuscripts at the NAA. Applications for publication subventions and multi-year grants will be considered.
